Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an amazing medicine that has been around for thousands of years. It is a method of balancing and building the body's life force or energy known as Qi. Disease is the result of imbalance or blockage in the body's natural energy flow. We believe acupuncture should be available to everyone as a routine health care option. For this reason, we practice community-supported acupuncture, a communal style of treatment with a sliding scale of payment affordable to most every income.

How does it work?

We practice a Japanese style of acupuncture that uses points on the hands, feet and head to treat problems anywhere in the body. Diagnosis begins with feeling the pulses on the wrist to determine which meridians need re-balancing. Gentle placement of tiny needles allows for the body to relax and begin to self regulate. Research and ancient tradition in Asia have shown that frequent and regular treatments are the most effective in promoting health, and in treating many chronic conditions.

Does it Hurt? I don't Like needles...

We use sterile, single use, disposable needles. These needles are very different from those used by your western medical practitioner when you get a shot. Acupuncture needles are not hollow. They are very fine and hair-like in appearance. Most of our patients find the experience very relaxing and are able to fall asleep soon after the insertion of the needles.

The Treatment environment

treatmentOur clinic is a large space with high ceilings and clusters of comfy recliner chairs. Fountains, music and soft lighting are used as a backdrop to promote relaxation. In whispers we ask a few questions about what you are experiencing. We feel your pulses at your wrist to determine which meridian needs balancing. We use points primarily on your hands, feet and scalp. We typically offer you a blanket while you rest. Treatment time is about an hour, but some people stay longer. You can rest in your chair as long as you wish. After treatment most people feel refreshed and energized. Other people don't feel anything until the next day. There is no right or wrong experience with your own healing.

What is Group "Qi" energy

Community supported acupuncture is a sustainable business model that was started in Northeast Portland by the Working Class Acupuncture clinic. The group treatment setting not only makes acupuncture affordable but creates a "community Qi." We have found that the energy in the room amplifies individual healing. You can share the healing energy by bringing your family and friends.

Take time for yourself

In the hustle bustle of daily life you can use acupuncture to take time for yourself to just relax. Stress is a major trigger for many conditions. Acupuncture can be part of your routine maintenance and preventative care.
